1. Nine (2009)
what a cast. Daniel Day Lewis, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Judy Dench, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman.
it's a musical. many songs and performances were very good. my favourite - Penelope, Kate Hudson and second song of Marion

but the story - meh. yawn. as one reviewer said "i wanted to like it more than i did"

2. The private lives of Pippa Lee (2009)
another movie with an amazing cast. Robin Wright Penn, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reaves, Monica Belucci, Alan Arkin

i loved this movie :-) highly recommend

3. Avatar
at first i did not want to see it, having been given a short description by Cartman - "dances with smurfs". Pocahontas with blue people.

then people started raving about it so i checked it out

well, i liked it. visually very nice. story-wise - quite limited, but who cares. actually lots of people do, but i didnt care much.
not the best movie ever made, but not the worst either.
as for breakthrough - i am not a specialist, but for me "Lord of the rings" seemed as a much bigger breakthrough in visual component of the film.

watched THE GRADUATE (1967)

oh my god. what an annoying boring movie.

but for its time - yes, groundbreaking.

1. I loved you for so long - Il y a longtemps que je t'aime (2008)

I love Krist Scott Thomas. very good movie. with unexpected (for me) ending. not your usual "sisters reunite after one of them was in prison" type of drama

2. The dutchess (2008)

another example of stupid and misleading marketing. from the previews i expected something very lighthearted a-la "she is trying to make her husband fall in love with her". come on, Keira Knightly is in it.

hell to the no. quite a tough drama. not bad though, but not a light period piece i was expecting.

sucked to be a woman then, didnt it?

3. Julie and Julia (2009)

Meryl Streep is great, as usual. and I am sure Julia Child had quite a life and deserved a movie.

but can anyone explain why the Julie part needed to be filmed at all? oh, she has a mid life crisis and decides TO COOK. wow. make me a movie! Amy Adams is sweet, but i dont give two shits about her character.

The Namesake (2006)

boring.

there is nothing special about the story. he marries her. they move to USA. she has problems adjusting. they have kids. kids grow up american. some mild cultural conflicts. trips back to India. marriage. death. lifes go on.

blah. like millions of other families. i dont see why this story deserved to be made into a movie.

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

Heath Ledger's LAST FILM! Has Colin Farrel, Johnny Depp, and Jude Law in it! very attractive and visually spectacular trailer!

WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP.

boring as hell. does not make much sense. when something happens you go "what the fuck", then 15 minutes of nothing. and "what the fuck was that", and boredom again. plus some child porn (the main actress is supposed to be 15 in the movie. what the fuck was that about?). awesome. what a waste of money and time.

what was that metal tube about? why are they blowing up in the imagination? why sometimes there is devil in imagination and sometimes there isnt? what was the ending about? what was that "5 souls" thing? which souls? what did they have to do?

huh? what? come again?

XXY (2007) - very good movie. deals with a different "differentness" than usual gay/lesbian movies. the main actress was great.

i won two tickets for a pre-premier screening of Let the right one in

i saw the poaters in the metro, but they did not catch my attention and i would have never gone to see it. well, when i won the tickets i checked out the movie on www.imdb.com and apparently it is already in top 250 best films ever

well, what can i say. un-glamorized vampire life. as it is :-)

i think - a good movie. check the description following the link above.

30th-Mar-2009 12:47 am - not your usual gay crap movie
simpson
Mambo Italiano (2003) - very nice film. could have been a cliche, but wasnt. not usual gay crap.

two Italian guys (therefore baggage aka family) fall in love. one comes out. another one doesn't want to and thinks about marrying a girl.

i think i m lucky that i did not have all the family drama related to my coming out.

this movie i think succeeds in not painting coming out as a panacea, and shows that it can be difficult, and maybe not for everyone. some people are more comfortable getting married, having kids, conforming to society and fucking boys on the side. sometimes wives know, sometimes they dont or dont care (at least it s not a woman and he stays in the family etc.). i don't know... yes, one may say "they lie to people around them", but what if those who are around them dont want to know the truth and are quite happy with the things as they are? and what if the gay guy himself is ok with staying in the closet. well, whatever floats your boat. i m not going to judge such guys. everyone's circumstance are different.

1. Apocalypto (2006) - Mel Gibson's movie about Mayas. visually very captivating. but i guess its emphasis was on the visual component, because the story itself is pretty weak. a guy gets abducted, a guy escapes and runs home being chased by his captors. Main character is hot though :-)

2. Che. Part 1 and Part 2 (2008) - Benicio del Toro as Che Guevara. Part 1 covers invasion of Cuba and success of the revolution. Part 2 covers his Bolivian expedition, capture and execution. I liked Part 1 very much. Part 2 is much slower and more boring. Benicio is great in this.

3. I am legend (2007) - Will Smith survives a deadly virus in NYC. people turn into light sensitive wampires. Will Smith is hot without a shirt. Another example of a movie screwed by focus groups who did not like the original ending. Too much CGI - the monsters look too "computer"-y. in general - meh. I am glad i did not see this in a movie theater.

4. Kite runner (2007) - good film. Afganistan, two childhood friends, betrayal, redemption. Some parts made me cringe. some parts were pretty farfetched. But good movie nevertheless.

On a side note - all these cultures with "shut the fuck up and do what elders tell you" make me very angry.

there are posters in the underground about a new film "Bronson".

i had no idea what it was about so i got curious. well, fuck me... the people they make movies about...

Charles Bronson (born 6 December, 1952) is the adopted name of Michael Gordon Peterson, a Welsh criminal who has been referred to in the British press as the "most violent prisoner in Britain".

the dude spent in jail most of his life, spent a total of just four months and nine days out of custody since 1974, has not been allowed to mix with other prisoners since 1999.  His sentence has been repeatedly extended for crimes committed within prison, which include wounding with intent, wounding, criminal damage, grievous bodily harm, false imprisonment, blackmail and threatening to kill.

tagline of the film is "The Man. The Myth. The Celebrity"

are you fucking kidding me?

somebody commented on the movie's message board on IMDB:  so if i became a sociopathic scumbag i'll get a movie too?

1. Happy-go-lucky (2008) - if you get irritated by happy people and think they are put here on Earth to remind you how sad you are, don't watch this film :-) It is about a woman with a very positive outlook in life. nothing puts her down. and obviously some characters think that she is doing that on purpose to irritate them.

i think it is very nice movie. kind of a reminder that our own interpretations of other people's thoughts and actiond have more to do with US than with THEM. need to remind that myself sometimes.

2. Je t'aime, moi non plus (1976) - crap. pretentious "artsy" film. Joe Dallesandro is hot of course and has a nice ass. but the movie is crap. good music though.

The petite waitress Johnny works and lives in a truck-stop, where she's lonely and longs for love. She develops a crush on the garbage truck driver Krassky, although her sleazy boss Boris warns her that he's gay. Maybe because of her boyish looks, Krassky likes her too. Both don't notice the growing jealousy of Krassky's boyfriend Padovan - until an escalation.

3. Sweeny Todd: Demon barber of Fleet street(2007) - crap. turned off after 20 min.

4. In Bruges (2008) - very nice :-) recommend highly.

5. Virgin suicides (1999) - crap by Sofia Coppola. about how tough it is to be a 13 year old girl. and 14 year old girl. and 15 year old girl. it is tought to be a girl period.

6. Edge of heaven (2007) - there was some fuss about this film this summer. i did not like it at all. bunch of mindless coincidences, lots of stupid people doing stupid things. pretentious crap made deliberately for festivals and awards. but not without good moments.

Don't Give an Oscar to The Reader
We don't need another "redemptive" Holocaust movie.

SPOILERS HEREIN

While i agree with some points raised in the article (i do think some of the nudity was gratuitous, and i think the author does manage to show a tendency towards revisionism in movies about Holocaust), i think he misunderstood the movie. I think Hanna did not say she was illiterate during the process not because she was ashamed of it, but because she felt an enormous guilt and wanted to be punished. but that's my point of view.

Rachel getting married (2008)- very nice. Anne Hathaway is very good in this one. makes you think that my own family and childhood were pretty normal and great :-) and they actually were. some parallels to Sherry baby, which i also recommend.
